  • Update: iPod Nano Video (3G)

11/17: There is a debdiff in launchpad, and that maybe an easier method around this issue, but I have not tried it. I also haven’t gotten video working in Linux. I also found out syncing with iTunes in Windows means deleting everything off my iPod Nano.

I have got the iPod Nano to work with Ubuntu Fesity 7.04 and Gutsy 7.10. The database on the iPod in the latest generation was hashed, so then Linux users were out of luck. Not too long later it was cracked, but the updates to libgpod (which Amarok uses) for access to the iPod do not filter though the system that fast. The updated code for libgpod was not released yet, it was only available in SVN repositories. Compiling libgpod was not a big issue.

I am not sure about Amarok’s support for video, I’ll have to try it again, but it seems to not be functioning.

The SVN version of gtkpod works for transferring video. The version of gtkpod in the repositories depended on the old libgpod, so I needed to compile it from source. The gtkpod required some package which gave me great trouble. There was a compile error for finding some libraries, but the proper deb were installed. There are reports on Lanchpad of this, but it is already too late in the release cycle for Gusty to be fixed anyways. There is no solution/guide posted for this issue, but somewhere suggested to search the Debian repostires for libmp4v2-dev, which depended on libmp4v2, libmpeg4ip, and libmpeg4ip-dev. (There is also something strange with the history of these programs, as things split and merged together.) After those debs were installed, I was able to finally compile gtkpod and have it run after trying to compile its dependencies unsuccessfully.

The next issue is the conversion rmvb files to something the Nano understands, while in Linux. Also, to figure out what works with what program.

  • Fire on Hill By Campus

It happened on Tues October 9, 2007, but I am not posting about it until now, so far they do not know what happened, but are looking for someone who is seen leaving that general area.

I was on campus by Dexter Lawn walking to my 12:10 PM lab while studying for Chinese quiz, when Steven noticed why everyone seemed to be looking at something behind us. There was a fire on the hill by the Poly Canyon area, and there was a large area of black smoke billowing from the hill. Also, in lab you hear helicopters flying around, something that we usually don’t hear. According the news I have read that area is hilly, with limit access, so air support is very important.
