  • Ubuntu 8.10 avarice USB permission issue

Posted on January 9th, 2009 wt8008 No comments

Apparently lots of people are having issues with permissions with USB devices, mines is the AVR Dragon. Using sudo allows the command to work. Most people change the udev mask rules to 0666 to allow everyone to read and write. I found that in Ubuntu the package does not setup the udev rules file properly.

When installing the packages the file /dev/udev.d/avarice.rules already exists to setup the permissions and group.

    Snippet:

    # Atmel Corp. AVR Dragon
    ATTRS{idVendor}=="03eb", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2107", MODE="0666", GROUP="dialout"

The avarice.rules file is linked to /etc/udev/rules.d/z60_avarice.rules, but it does not work, so create a new link:

    cd /etc/udev/rules.d

    sudo ln -s ../avarice.rules 60-avarice.rules

Replug in the AVR Dragon and it should work, assuming you are in the dialout group. You can check the /etc/group files to see if you are a memeber of that group.

  • Finals Over, Most Grades Out

On Friday, I signed up for the Computer Science Minor. My roommate helped me plan it out. After I come back from my co-op I hope to have only Senior Project and one Technical Elective (with lab) left for me to obtain my BSEE. I have four more courses to obtain the minor, the four core courses I taken all of them over a period of three years. I have five courses left, so I plan to take two in Fall 2008 (CPE 315, 357) and Winter 2009 (EE, CPE 316, 464) along with senor project both quarters. The next question is to make sure those classes are offered those quarters.

Working on my lab, but my input and output matching networks are not correct, especially my output matching network, since the VSWR is 40. aiya~~ The input one is 3.5 – 6. Something is wrong with my workings with the smith chart. The total gain I get is < 10 dB, but Go (transistor gain) for unilateral case gives 14 dB. xD

Midterm season is going to be in full swing for this week and a part of next. Time to push everything aside, including sleep for midterms. Yay! 🙁

  • Fire on Hill By Campus

Posted on October 14th, 2007 wt8008 No comments

It happened on Tues October 9, 2007, but I am not posting about it until now, so far they do not know what happened, but are looking for someone who is seen leaving that general area.

I was on campus by Dexter Lawn walking to my 12:10 PM lab while studying for Chinese quiz, when Steven noticed why everyone seemed to be looking at something behind us. There was a fire on the hill by the Poly Canyon area, and there was a large area of black smoke billowing from the hill. Also, in lab you hear helicopters flying around, something that we usually don’t hear. According the news I have read that area is hilly, with limit access, so air support is very important.

  • Moving in Sunday

My other roommates are moving in on Saturday, but I’m going to move in on Sunday. =/ That means they are going to get dibs on all the good stuff first in the apartment. 🙁

  • Moving out

Posted on June 17th, 2007 wt8008 No comments

I’m moving out tomorrow afternoon, across the street to my summer housing. I’m going to be like the only one in SLO. xD Well… we will see who is around. I’m doing the 8 week session because of CPE103, hopefully summer won’t be a big rush, so I don’t get burned out for fall. I will only be taking 8 units. Summer school starts on Thursday, kind of weird isn’t it, and my RELG307 class got canceled already so then I actually only have two hours of class. I’m planning right now to just go to SLO then 2 hours later go home, then take the bus back on Sunday or Monday.

My roommates are gone, the apartment is really quiet. 😛 The only one that is left is the exchange student from Nanjing, and his flight from LAX to Pudong is Tuesday afternoon. Kind of weird to want everything to end when you are over your head with stuff to do, and when it is all over you find you don’t mind it that much.

I’ll see what happens next year, since I’ll be changing roommates and stuff. My other current roommate is going to exchange to China. Next, year we better do cleaning more daily, it is impossible to clean to stove!

Time to sleep now, I need to finish packing before my folks arrive.

  • Interesting…

I have noticed that only five weeks has passed since my last post, but it seems longer. Just sitting here typing make me think of a bunch of stuff I still need to do

    • finalize summer housing at Cal Poly
    • send in rebate for Creative EP-630 earphones
    • pick senior year tech electives

and of course a bunch of little things I need to do for classes. Ninth week means final exams soon, basically they are here with a blink of an eye. I’m going to be working on my Chinese final presentation tomorrow, maybe it will be filmed for once, that would be interesting to see the result.

My roommates along with me now are hooked on Starcraft (for me it is again), and we have been playing LAN, but we sure do suck. Why does the Starcraft 2 announcement have to come out now. Luckily I have some free time to join in. xD

There was quiet a bit of burning going on in EE lab today, Viet killed two of my PNP transistors in my CA3096 chip that he was using in a current mirror. Smoke came out of the chip. o.O A small SMT transistor was also burned on our Nexys board since he was building some kind of amplifier using the board as a power supply for our final lab project.

  • Spring Quarter

Posted on April 26th, 2007 wt8008 No comments

Spring Quarter passes so quickly, it is already the fourth week, well today is Thursday is make it fifth week. I just noticed I haven’t posted in over a month, but seems like time doesn’t go by that fast.

Two weekends ago me and my roommates went all the way to Santa Maria Boomers to play miniature golf. The first time I played it and apparently I suck at it (from the score). I’m too lazy to rant about classes so whatever.
